For close to 50 years, The Breezeway has been a top choice among Misquamicut Beach hotels. The Breezeway Resort is a beachside haven situated within a 5 acre compound with three park-like courtyards. 50 cozy guest rooms, suites, villas and one cottage are arranged among manicured lawns, flower gardens and fountains lovingly cared for by my family and staff. With high standards and a strong work ethic instilled by my parents, Maria and Nicolo Bellone, the resort continues to operate with the same family-friendly, personal spirit that set The Breezeway apart when it opened 5 decades ago.

Swimming PoolA day at the beach is great, but sometimes there's nothing better than leaving the sand behind for the civility of the pool. Just off of an extreme pool makeover, the Breezeway heated pool is the jewel of our property. The bright blue water makes a stunning contrast against the brick apron.
Leave the sand behind and jump into the warm water in our crystal clear heated swimming pool. Lounge on a chaise around the pool or upstairs on the sun deck. Read a book, play cards, or sip on a cold drink. Towels, restroom, and shower facilities are available, and the pool is handicapped-accessible. Pool hours: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. seasonally |
HISTORy
The year was 1970. The Jackson 5 was at the top of the charts. Nixon was president. The Mod Squad was a popular TV show. The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl and the Ford Pinto was about to be introduced. Here at Misquamicut Beach, Maria and Nicolo Bellone were about to buy the Breezeway Motel from the former Westerly Police Chief Ray Meikle and his wife Helen.
The image on the right is a postcard of the Breezeway Motel from that era. The back of the card reads, "14 modern comfortable units, private showers, quiet location, beautiful grounds." At the time, the private showers seemed like a luxurious amenity, but the truth is that four of those units had to share an outdoor shower located near where our laundry area is now. Maria and Nicolo immediately began upgrading and modernizing the property. You'll be glad to know that by opening day in 1971, each room had a private shower, which was just a prelude to what the future would bring. Like the countless immigrants who came before them, Maria and Nicolo would create their own American Dream. |
The photo is of Nicolo applying stucco in front of room 215 in 1975 (back then it was room number 25).
Nicolo (Nick), who emigrated from Tusa, Sicily in 1959, arrived at the dock in New York City with wide-eyed ambition, little to no money and a canvas bag with some masonry tools. It didn't take long for him to go into business for himself as a mason. All he had was an old sedan and no financial means to buy a truck. So he did the next best thing. He tore out the backseat and made a makeshift vehicle. With his creative thinking, hard work and the help of his new bride Maria, he was able to buy the Breezeway eleven years later. |
The photo is of Maria behind the front desk in 1971.
Maria, also from Tusa, married Nicolo in Westerly on June 18, 1964 (and no, this wasn't an arranged marriage like you may have seen in The Godfather II). By the time they purchased the Breezeway, they had three children with the youngest (me) in diapers. Armed with her teaching degree and good looks, Maria was a natural to manage this new venture while Nicolo went out looking for more real estate to buy. The original multitasker, Maria raised a young family, operated a business and threw some serious dinner parties. Oftentimes, guests were invited up to the kitchen for dinner. Yes, back then our home was adjacent to the lobby. Now after 50 plus years, we look back on the changes, the success of The Breezeway and the couple who made it all happen, Nicolo and Maria Bellone. Through their determination and hard work, my parents and The Breezeway exemplify the American dream. Though my beautiful mother recently passed away, I can assure you that this dream will never die. Thank you, John for The Bellone Family |
