A brief history

This is a postcard of The Breezeway Motel back in the summer of 1970. It was that year that our parents purchased the property from the former Police Chief of Westerly, Rhode Island. The postcard advertises “14 modern, comfortable units, Private Showers – Quiet Location, Beautiful grounds.” We are pleased to say that thirty five years later, The Breezeway Resort still offers modern, comfortable units, a quiet location, beautiful grounds and yes…. even private showers. If only the postcard photographer had only brought a wider angle lens… The Breezeway would grow and grow and…

Nicola (our Dad), who had emigrated from Sicily, came to America with two crucial items … his canvas bag full of masonry tools and… Maria (our Mom). Before the ink was dry on the mortgage, Nicola would put those masonry tools to good use. Legend has is it that he built the fireplace in the lobby in one day.

Maria, armed with a teaching degree was the obvious choice for heading up both the accounting and marketing divisions of the new company. Working out of an office that was about the size of a breadbox, she managed The Breezeway. How she managed to raise three little kids at the same time is another question. Luckily… our house was attached to the office.

Fast forward four decades…. The Breezeway now can advertise more than 50 modern and immaculate guestrooms, suites, villas and deluxe cottage set in a peaceful park like setting. We can also advertise ocean view units that we call Maria’s Suites. Did we mention that the teacher from Sicily even has her own seaside café named Maria’s.
